This contract was conducted at 2 rail sites in Kent - Ashford and Faversham. The driver behind this project was a major rail disaster where accountability had been compromised by missing or deficient rail maintenance data. Datasets for such maintenance were held locally in a variety of formats and were often poorly maintained.
A government mandate to correct this was issued and an application called MIMS was selected to be the centralised steward of all rail maintenance and asset data. In order to populate this system, data had to be checked, cleansed and corrected.
My job, along with half a dozen other analysts was to review the data from a variety of local depots and reconcile asset data to maintenance plans and schedules.
During the first couple of weeks I developed several VBA modules within Excel to automatically reconcile row data based on sets of scripted rules. The demonstrated output was provided to the project manager who was impressed enough to have it rolled out to the entire data team.
Due to this automation a significant amount time and manual effort was circumnavigated to ensure that all our deliverables were both on time and satisfactorily quality assured.
